12 Hours Down, 12 More To Go For Corsa Team PR1

DAYTONA BEACH, FL. - Jan. 31, 2010
With the 48th running of the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona half over, Corsa Team PR1 has been forced to realign priorities and adjust expectations. Max Hyatt of San Jose, CA started the #32 Corsa Car Care Products BMW M6 in a torrential downpour that forced the first six laps to be ran under the yellow flag. When the skies finally relented, Hyatt put his head down and quickly acclimated to the mixed conditions and moved his M6 up the field while several of his competitors struggled to find a comfortable pace. By the 47th lap, Hyatt, a Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona rookie, took the lead in his first stint and held the position for several laps, only giving the top spot up to adhere to a planned pit stop for fuel and tires.
"It was a dream come true," Hyatt exclaimed when asked how it felt to lead at Daytona. "I always wanted to compete here, and to be able to race my way up to the front in my first attempt, in my first stint, it was just amazing."
Jeff Westphal of San Carlos, CA took over driving duties and left pit road with slick tires on the BMW for the first time since the rain soaked green flag flew a few hours earlier. However as the track was now dry, a few chassis modifications needed to take place during the pit stop, relegating Westphal to P6 as he lined up for the re-start. With the track now dry, Westphal began to post numerous fast times throughout his initial stint and regained several of the positions lost during the necessary long pit stop.
"The car is working perfectly, even in these mixed conditions," Westphal said. "I think we're a threat, absolutely."
A full course caution allowed Corsa Team PR1 strategists to pit the M6 for fuel, and to allow Thomas Merrill of Salinas, CA to get in for a planned double stint. After a promising start to Merrill's session, he reported that his onboard water bottle did not contain enough fluid and that he was beginning to become dehydrated. Merrill's lap times continued to be competitive, one of which proved to be the fastest of the still young race, but his dehydration induced fatigue became serious enough for the team to pit him earlier than planned, and place Rob Finaly of Peterborough, NH in the #32.
"I was having a lot of fun at first, but I just got wiped out," Merrill said. "We decided it would be far better to save my energy for the rest of the race, rather than force the issue and risk further dehydration just to stay on our double stint strategy."
With Finlay in the cockpit, the BMW was once again back on pace, until a Mazda RX-8 made slight contact with Finlay's machine. Seemingly innocuous at first, the contact would ultimately set off a series of mechanical issues that would force the #32 into the garage for extensive repairs, costing the team 45 laps and a likely chance for a podium result.
Finaly echoed the team's resolve to continue fighting for the best possible result.
"Anything can happen in this race, that's the nature of endurance events," Finlay said. "But there's still so much time left, we'll have to wait and see what happens. But we'll keep fighting for the best finish we can get."
Team owner Bobby Oergel remains motivated despite the team's unfortunate luck.
"Obviously, this situation is not what we hoped for," Oergel said. "But that's no reason to throw in the towel. We led some laps, we were fighting with the best teams and drivers in the world, and we're certainly not the only quick team to experience some trouble today, so let's see what happens. We're not going to stop racing until the checkered flag."
