Ryan Lewis Joins Tom Papadopoulos and Johnny Mowlem in the PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports entry at Laguna Seca

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEMay 18, 2010 Fresno, CA -
The #52 Corsa Car Care/ Autosport Design Oreca FLM09 will be competing this weekend in round three of the 2010 American Le Mans Series presented by Patrón at the legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The 11-turn road course is highly favored among international fans and drivers alike. The natural terrain circuit is only 2.238 miles long, but drivers will still experience a long uphill to downhill starting straight, sweeping banked corners, a tight hairpin perfect for overtaking opportunities, and the dauntingly steep Turn 8-Turn 8A complex, more commonly referred to as the “Corkscrew”. With a 300 ft elevation change, drivers must delicately navigate the Corkscrew before immediately accelerating towards Rainey Curve, named after legendary motorcycle racer, Wayne Rainey.
Ryan Lewis of Royston, Hertfordshire, England will be joining the PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports driver roster this weekend. An experienced LMP1 pilot with a podium finish on his resume, Lewis brings his extensive experience to the team.
“I raced at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 2008 in an LMP1 car and thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” Lewis said. “It was the four-hour event in the fall, so there will be some weather and strategy differences for this six-hour spring event. But I tested at Buttonwillow and was very impressed with the level of grip the LMPC car had. In the LMP1 car, I had more horsepower, but from what I’ve seen of the LMPC class so far, it looks like highly competitive racing. I’m very much looking forward to it and I’d like to thank MOBOTIX and LKM Recycling for their support.”
“I’ve known the guys from PR1/ Mathiasen from my days in Formula Atlantics in 2006, 2007, so I’m well aware of their level of professionalism,” Lewis continued. “So far everything is going great with them and I expect that we’ll be competitive together.”
Tom Papadopoulos, of Long Island , NY, and teammate Johnny Mowlem of Berkshire, England, will be returning to the #52 cockpit for the six-hour American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Patrón. The duo made their LMPC debut for PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports on the streets of Long Beach and are eager to get back behind the wheel.
For Papadopoulos, consistency and speed will be required for a top finish.
“We know we have a good set up, we know the team is up to it, now it’s solely up to the drivers to maintain consistency, have good speed, and to stay clean and get us to the end with a podium finish”, Papadopoulos explained. “There will be plenty of traffic and plenty of time to set up passes. Patience will play a great role in this race.”
Mowlem, a former winner at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, is hoping to return to the top step this weekend.
“I always love racing at Laguna and it has been kind to me in the past, delivering me a win and six podiums from nine starts,” said Mowlem. “Tom came on leaps and bounds at Long Beach and I know Ryan is really fast and hungry for success as well. So I’m hoping that I can help deliver PR1/ Mathiasen Motorsports their first success in the American Le Mans Series.”
Both drivers are confident in the #52 Corsa Car Care/ Autosport Design Oreca FLM09’s speed and potential.
“If the #52 is half as good as it was on the streets of Long Beach, Laguna will be exceptional,” says Papadopoulos.
“The nature of this race at Laguna Seca, the six-hour distance, is something that will hopefully play to our strengths,” Mowlem continued.
Bobby Oergel, PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Team Principal, will be managing both his ALMS and Pacific F2000 teams this weekend.
“We have the six-hour ALMS race on Saturday and two F2000 races on Sunday,” Oergel stated. “We’ll be busy for sure, but that’s nothing new for us. We’re used to long hours. We’ve been testing and preparing our program for this event and we’ve got a lot of laps around Laguna so there won’t be any surprises there. We know what to do, and with Tom, Ryan, and Johnny in the car, we have a really great chance at showing our competitors what we’re capable of.”
For Ray Mathiasen, Oergel’s business partner and co-owner of PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a personal favorite.
“I used to love racing here with our Atlantic program, and I know our LMPC entry will be quick here as well, Mathiasen said. "It’s a long race, which means you have to be patient and fast at the same time. I really enjoy coming to Monterey, it’s a beautiful area with a fast track. What else can you ask for?”
Qualifying for the American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Patrón at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca begins on Friday, May 21, 2010 at 3:30pm ET with the six-hour event beginning May 22, 2010 at 2:30pm ET.
